Afief commenced working on his PhD at the Signal Processing Group in October 2017 after being awarded in the DAAD-Indonesian German Scholarship Programme. His research interest is in the field of statistical signal processing in ground-penetrating radar (GPR) for landmine detection. The research goal is to design robust detection techniques which are insensitive to environmental changes in beam-formed forward-looking GPR images.

From March 2014 to June 2017, Afief was working as a lecturer in Universitas Telkom, Indonesia, where he delivered lecturers in signal processing, physics, electromagnetic theory, digital and optical communication systems. Afief was a publicity chair in multiple conferences sponsored by the IEEE Indonesia Section, e.g., the International Conference on Aerospace Electronics and Remote Sensing Technology (ICARES 2014), the Asia-Pacific Conference on Communications (APCC 2016) and the Asia-Pacific on Wireless and Mobile (APWiMob 2014, 2016).

In February 2014, Afief graduated with a M.Sc. from Universitas Telkom in Electrical Engineering with a major in Telecommunication. His master thesis was focused on exploring statistical features for automatic modulation classification of OFDM signals. Before, he worked as an assistant lecturer at the same university for two years. In August 2010, he received his B.Sc. in Telecommunication Engineering from Institut Teknologi Telkom. In cooperation with Telkom Indonesia, he wrote his bachelor thesis on traffic estimation and characterization for the design of submarine optical communication systems. With his work, he contributed to the completion of the East Palapa Ring Project, a fiber-optic project in the eastern Indonesian archipelago.
