Thema des Vortrags: „Fundamentals of Passive Sonar Signal Processing“

Abstract:

Radio frequency techniques like radar cannot be applied in an underwater environment due to the high attenuation of electro-magnetic waves in water. In contrast to this, sound waves can propagate over long distances which motivated the development of sound navigation and ranging (sonar) systems.

In submarines active sonars are used for navigation purposes and detection of obstacles. The main task of submarines is the covert surveillance of the environment. Therefore, a set of different passive sonar sensors is used. In the presentation the signal processing of a passive sonar will be discussed, covering the path from the sensor element outputs to the representation in a human-machine interface (HMI). This includes beamforming, detection, and tracking as well as classification of objects.

Brief Biography

Sebastian Knabe received the Dipl. degree and the Dr. rer. nat. degree, both in physics from the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Universität Oldenburg, Germany, in 2008 and 2011, respectively.

Since 2011, Sebastian has been with ATLAS ELEKTRONIK GmbH, Bremen, Germany. Holding different positions in the company’s research branch, he was working on various signal processing problems for active and passive sonars. His current position is Head of the Submarine and Vessel Systems team within the Research & Algorithms department in the ATLAS ELEKTRONIK Sonar Center. His research interests are in the areas of array signal processing and classification with applications in sonar.
